The Cognitive Biases of Safety

The awareness about the impact of cognitive biases on a personal level is becoming well-known. In organizations, however, most are yet to see them as symptoms of governing culture.

Thorough data analysis has identified four groups of Cognitive Biases that influence how we address safety in the workplace:

  • Too high assumptions about our abilities
  • Wrong assumptions about others’ mistakes
  • Fear of how others are assumed to react
  • Wrong assumptions about how others are thinking.

In this paper, our Chief Scientist, Dr. Torkel Soma, and Chief Product Officer, Astrid Gjerdrum, give insights into how we can understand and overcome these cognitive biases of safety.
